Docs North | Docs Nord Workshops

Docs North | Docs Nord is a workshop program organized by Flash Frame Film & Video Network. During the workshop, emerging and independent film, television, and digital media producers from Northern Ontario learn about the art, craft, and fundamentals of filmmaking from leading experts.

Participants and mentors benefit from the sharing of skills and knowledge. The diverse groups we bring together gain practical knowledge and share ideas regarding filmmaking, animation, new media, and interactive and web-based media projects.

Docs North 6 | Docs Nord 6 – Isolation

2023

Docs North 6 took place over 5 days in September 2023. Our theme for this project was “isolation.” In this context, we are referring to the isolating nature of the Northern Indigenous communities surrounding us and how isolated we are in Thunder Bay. Two films were created as part of this project.

This project was funded by the Ontario Arts Council and the Government of Ontario.

Docs North 5 | Docs Nord 5 – Harm Reductions

2018

Our 5th Docs North targeted filmmakers and activists interested in working on the theme of harm reduction. We combined in-person workshops that were live-streamed to other communities, such as Sioux Lookout or Moose Factory. The films were screened at the Vox Popular Media Arts Festival.

At the Edge: Age, Injury, and the Positivity of Grappling

Created by C. Nathan Hatton, Skyler J.A. Duggan, Dale Carmichael, Adrien Harpelle, and Alyssa Kusik

At the Edge is a short film about a thriving community focused on grappling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and other combat sports. Participation comes with a price. Many bare scars, but battle wounds rarely discourage these warriors.
